Are you looking for some little things that can improve communication with your partner? No matter how much you love him, it is a universally shared fact that sometimes, for reasons you might not be able to explain, you go through a period of bad communication with your beloved partner! It might be down to work stress, it might be down to a couple of mood swings on either side, or it might be completely out of the blue. No matter how it happens, a lack of communication with the person that you love can be difficult to navigate. The great thing is that if you are reading this, then you have recognised that there is a problem that needs to be addressed, and that is half of the battle! Here are a few little things that can improve communication with your partner.

1. One Thing at a Time

Rather than laying it all out on the table in front of each other, bring up one thing at a time and try to deal with that before moving on to the next thing. This strategy will help to prevent smaller issues turning into big ones, and you will feel great being able to storm through a list together. This is one of the best little things that can improve communication with your partner.

2. Be Tactful

Consider the feelings of your partner when you want to bring something up. Use your common sense and be tactful. For example, don’t bring up the fact that you both need to watch your expenses after you have just come through the door with a brand new pair of shoes. Pick your times for the most effective and calm discussions!

3. No Tired Talking

Don’t try to start a serious or sensitive conversation when both of you are tired and about to go to bed. Being halfway to dreamland isn’t the best atmosphere to bring up an important relationship discussion because you won’t be able to concentrate fully and your temper could be shorter than usual.

4. Eye Contact

Making eye contact is really important when talking with your partner because it shows him that you are completely present in the moment and that your attention is solely focused on him. Don’t try to conduct a meaningful discussion while also playing Candy Crush on your phone; it just won’t work.

5. Use Feeling Words

Remember to throw in a bunch of feelings words when talking to your partner. It makes him know that you are coming from a place of your own experience rather than just pointing out things that he is doing that you don’t like. Using feeling words also encourages you to get a sense of your own reactions in real time.

6. Speak and Listen

It’s important that you get your feelings off of your chest via your words, but it is equally important that you extend the courtesy and really listen to what your partner has to say in response. You will never make any progress if one or both of you want to say your bit but not listen to what the other person has to say.

7. Take Breaks

If you feel like are starting to hit a wall in terms of progress, then be mindful of it and take a break from the discussion. You never know, you might come back into the conversation with a new perspective.

8. Don’t Discuss Anything when Drunk

Drinking alcohol is the worst thing you can do to encourage meaningful discussion. It will hinder your thought process and can even encourage you to say things that you don’t mean and that can be hurtful.

9. Talk, Don’t Text

There is a nuance in real speech that can’t be achieved via text, so make sure that you do all of your most important communicating with your partner face to face rather than through a smartphone screen.
