Like any other myths, common sex myths are easy to believe because they are perpetuated by people who think they are true. Sex, dating, birth control…life in general. This is complicated stuff and sometimes people make stuff up. Like “instead of using a condom, you can jump up and down after sex” (not true - gravity and physical activity do not affect sperm). So how do you figure out what’s real and what’s fake?
Here are 8 common sex myths. I am bursting them one at a time.
I have heard this before, but I cannot confirm or deny where and from who. In fact, it's one of the most common sex myths out there. I can confirm one thing for sure. Sexual intercourse is not just penile/vaginal, It’s also oral and anal sex.
I have definitely heard this. It’s one of the many excuses guys give when you ask them to put on a condom. “My pullout game is strong, we don’t need a condom.” Really, is it? Many Millennials, especially males, use this term to reference their ability to "pull out" during sexual intercourse before they ejaculate semen into their partner. This is not an effective form of contraceptive and does no prevent either pregnancy or STD’s. So ladies, Don’t let some horny, hapless boy toy or a panting, pushy boyfriend, even a husband make you go against your better judgment. Babies are a blessing, cute and sweet but you better to be ready for them.
“Too big for a condom”. That is not a valid excuse to have unsafe sex. If you're old enough to be having sex, you should be wise enough to know that having unprotected sex is a bad move, barring specific circumstances. If a guy ever tells you this, show him your middle finger and walk out.
You won’t get pregnant from sex as long as you do it in a pool or in a hot tub. Ever seen that TV show Glee? Well if you haven’t, just know that the statement is wrong. There is nothing in water of any temperature, of any kind, that can kill sperm. Neither water or heat stops sperm. Don’t get it twisted.
Ever seen a great sex scene? Well in movies it usually goes like this. Two lovers meet, sparks fly and mind-blowing sex naturally follows. In the real world, it’s different. The human body doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Good communication is the key to good sex, as is a willingness to be open to trying new techniques and positions to find out what each partner finds pleasurable. It can be a little awkward at first to over-communicate during sex, but think about the outcome: a partner who knows how to do it right every time.
Oral sex seems to have the stigma of a “free pass” as far as sexual relationships go. Yes, it does count as sex, and yes, you can get a sexually transmitted disease from oral sex. There is still an exchange of fluids, meaning that diseases can enter your body through sores or small cuts in your mouth and throat. Don’t let that guy tell you that oral sex doesn’t count. “It doesn’t count babe.” Yes it does.
This myth reminds me of high school and dumb jocks. “Sperm can swim in any direction, and they swim pretty darn fast.” I am just going to leave it at that.
According to researchers in Canada, an hour of sex can burn 120 calories for men, and 90 for women. That’s a packet of Malteasers right there.
