Two of the most important people in your life are your significant other and your best friend. So what do you do when your significant other hates your BFF? Obviously, you love them both and don't want to choose. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to keep the peace and ensure both people stay in your life. After all, you should never be forced to choose between them.
1. Spend Time Separately
While you might want to spend time with both of them together, it might not be possible. Instead, spend time with each of them separately. Tell your significant other to hang out with his friends while you're off with your bestie. It's a win-win for everyone. Of course, you can still call and text whenever. After all, you probably knew your BFF first. Trust me, your friend will understand and do whatever they can to keep the peace.
2. Talk to Your Significant Other
It's hard to fix a problem until you understand what's wrong. Your significant other might have told you he hates your BFF, but did he tell you why? Sit down and ask him what the problem is. Maybe he feels your friend makes you act badly or causes tons of drama in your life. Maybe he knew your friend in the past and they had issues then. Odds are, he probably has a good reason. Once you know it, you might be able to fix it.
3. Include His BFF
If you want to hang out with both of them at once, have your significant other bring along his best friend too. It'll help make him more comfortable having someone else close to him to talk to. While there might still be some tense moments, it won't be nearly as bad. At the very least, he'll feel like you're making a solid effort and do his best to be civil. Try to do this as little as possible and he won't really mind when everyone has to hang out together.
4. Find a Shared Hobby or Interest
The problem could be that your significant other just doesn't have anything in common with your BFF. Talk to each of them separately and try to find something they might both like. Maybe they both love running or playing a certain board game. Get everyone together and do that activity. Doing something they both like will help them get to know each other a little better. They might not always get along perfectly, but it at least gives them some common ground.
5. Ask Him to Respect You
If your significant other tends to say horrible things about your bestie all the time in an attempt to change how you feel, speak up. Don't let him force you away from someone you care about. Ask him to respect you. Remind that you had a life before him and you're not going to give that up for anyone, including him. He might get mad at first, but if he truly cares, he'll step back and respect you. Just don't expect him to magically love your bestie.
6. Don't Try to Make Things Worse
In a perfect world, your BFF and significant other would get along fine. In reality, it might not happen. Constantly nagging your guy about it or complaining to your friend about it isn't going to make things better. In fact, your guy might actually hate your bestie more. You might even cause your BFF to hate him too. After trying a few things to get your significant other to like your friend, let it go and just have separate time.
7. Refuse to Choose
In some cases, your significant other might try to force you to choose. It's not fair, it's not respectful and it's definitely not a good way to show someone you love them. If he does give you an ultimatum, refuse to choose. He'll either respect your decision or leave. If he leaves, then you know he's not the right one for you. Trust me, this is a sign he doesn't compromise and it'll just get worse over time.
No one likes being in a situation where their significant other hate their BFF. However, it doesn't happen. With a little patience and work, everything might just work out fine. Have you ever been in this situation?
