1. Wait
The first and most obvious thing to do is just wait it out! There could be a million different reasons why he hasn’t replied yet, from work trouble to friend trouble to any other kind of lengthy distraction, so the best thing to do right off the bat is just forget about the text for a little while and get on with something else. Chances are that he will shoot over a message when he gets the chance, so it’s not worth all the trouble of over analysing for an innocent reason or mistake! This is probably one of the best answers for what to do when he doesn't text you back.
2. Follow up Text
If you want to test whether he has forgotten to respond or is straight up ignoring you, then you can always send a casual sounding follow up text to see if you are greeted with the same lack of response. Try to think of something to say that directly relates to whatever it is you were last talking about. That way it will do the double job of sounding natural whilst also being a good tester of his desire to communicate with you.
3. Open Options
Don’t drop all of your plans to wait around for him when he isn’t texting back. Your entire life shouldn’t stop just because a guy thinks he is playing an impressive game by not getting back to you straight away. Make him see that you’re not always going to be available whenever he wants, and he might start to put a little bit more effort into responding to you when you are the one who is reaching out for communication.
4. Face to Face
Find a way to try to catch up with him in person instead if you can. Of course, you don’t want to turn into some sort of stalker, but if there is a chance in a work canteen or a college hallway or a local street, then make it happen and see what his reaction is. If he’s too cool for school then he has probably ghosted you, but if he is apologetic about his lack of interaction, you might want to cut him some slack.

It will help to keep your mind off of your texting drama, and it will also help to pass the time more quickly until he probably does text back! And hey, if he ends up not texting back at all, then at least you will have been out having fun and meeting new people in the meantime!
