If you ever wondered what makes certain couples so unique and special, you must know that actually there are a few important things happy couples talk about; things you should try too if you want to improve your relationship with your better half. Researcher Matthias Mehl said in an interview with The New York Times that “By engaging in meaningful conversations, we manage to impose meaning on an otherwise pretty chaotic world. And interpersonally, as you find this meaning, you bond with your interactive partner, and we know that interpersonal connection and integration is a core fundamental foundation of happiness.” Well, among the perks of being in a meaningful relationship is the fact that you’re able to discuss with your partner all kinds of things that you avoided during your early stages of dating. So, here are some of the most important things happy couples talk about:
Generally, people tend to avoid certain topics, especially during their early stages of dating because they don’t want to give the wrong impression and because they’re trying to impress their (possibly future) partner. Yet, you must know that among the most important things happy couples talk about are precisely those embarrassing moments which everyone wants to forget. Don’t be afraid to discuss all kinds of things with your meaningful other, no matter how embarrassing they might be. This way, you’ll both share a good laugh.
Everyone has something they’re afraid of and also a couple of insecurities which they’re trying to hide from everyone else. You should be able to talk with your significant half about everything including those things that scare you or that make you feel vulnerable. Once you do it, you feel understood, accepted and most importantly, you’ll have someone who will help you deal with all those little things that might worry you.
Among the things happy couples discuss is of course, their childhood, because that important stage in everyone’s life has had such a huge impact on our development. Also, it’s so much pleasant to remember all those funny moments from your childhood. You could get a bit nostalgic maybe, but those fun conversations can lend insight into how your partner became this amazing person that he (she) is today. Try to find out as much as possible about what was he (she) like when he (she) was little and you’ll have some explanations for the way he (she) behaves as a responsible adult.
Happy couples do talk about their future no matter how wonderful or scary it might be. You should definitely talk with your loved one about all your dreams, goals and aspirations, because they will be able to provide you the necessary support in order to accomplish all that you have in mind. Don’t be afraid that you might scare him (her) away with your plans concerning the two of you; he or she might want the same thing as you. You’ll never know unless you’ll bring that up into your conversation.
Okay, maybe it’s not quite appropriate to talk about past relationships with someone who you’ve only dated for two weeks, but things change when that person is your significant other. You shouldn’t keep secrets from each other. Just be honest and acknowledge what happened in your past. By talking about these topics, they won’t be tabuoo anymore and your partner will not be tempted to compare himself (herself) with any of your past lovers.
Although these are usually two of the most sensitive topics of conversation out there, they should never be this way when you’re talking with your better half. You don’t have to agree with each other all the time, because after all, everyone sees things differently, but you should still consider your loved one’s opinion when you’re taking an important decision based on your political viewpoints.
There are so many things that happen around us and that’s why sometimes is nearly impossible to stay up-to-date on everything new. By talking with your partner about current events, you’ll be able to find out more than you would manage on your own, because you might not always have the time to watch the news or read the newspapers and it’s always best to be informed so you’ll never be surprised by anything.
A lot of research has actually shown that people are happier when they spend their time discussing meaningful topics than engaging in small talk. Also that time spent discussing things is even more pleasant when you spend it talking with your significant other. Do you know any other important things happy couples talk about?
