There’s nothing like a good love song to pull on your heart strings, and as good as the old ones are, there are some modern day love songs that provide stiff competition. As much as the music has changed, the message is the same — love, being in love and letting the person you love know about it. If you are in the mood for feeling all gooey or have got someone special on your mind, then take a listen to these 7 modern days love songs and let the love flow!
After Jeremiah Fraites' (drums) brother died in 2011 he and his friend Wesley Schultz (guitar/ lead vocals) found solace in music. The two boys eventually moved to Colorado from NYC and found their final band member Neyla Pekarek on Craigslist. 11 years on and Spotify has named The Lumineers' first single ‘Ho Hey’ as the third most played song in the US. This is one of my favorite modern day love songs, and it proves that less is always more, with simple lyrics and a catchy rhythm. 'Ho Hey' steals your heart at first listen.
You knew it was bound to happen. How could I write a list of modern day love songs and not include one of Adele’s songs? This song is heartbreakingly beautiful and full of soul, the kind of song that gets you all teary just by listening to it (not that I would know or anything… tissue anyone?)...
First released on the internet in 2011, Lana Del Rey’s ‘Video Games’ is a slow, dark, modern day love song that reached the top ten on the charts in over 10 countries worldwide. Maybe a little too ominous for some people’s tastes, ‘Video Games’ saturates you in nostalgia, setting your mind wondering to the matters of your heart.
Here we have a modern day love song that ‘covers the darker side of love,’ the universal feelings of emotional pain you experience when you feel as though you can’t go on without that certain someone in your life. Featured on the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1., ‘It Will Rain’ pretty much sums up how Edward feels about Bella minus all the blood sucking of course…
Hello sexy, lonesome, misunderstood rock god- what’s that? You could 'use somebody’? Well look no further. Kings Of Leon hit the nail on the head with this modern day love song, with enough grit for the guys to get into it and the perfect amount of soul for the girls to swoon over – we have a winner people!
It’s one of the oldest on the list, but ‘Wherever You Will Go’ is a classic love song with a modern day rock twist. Is there anything more appealing than a man singing his heart out whilst confessing his love to you in his deep and oh so sexy voice? (Excluding Michael Bolton and Rod Stewart.)
I did not think much of Drake until I saw this video clip, but since then I have been smitten. There’s nothing like a modern day duet to get you thinking about the one you love, Rihanna and Drake couldn't make a hotter couple in this video if they tried.
If I'm being honest, I am not so thrilled about listing a Kanye West song on this list. Personally, I'm not his biggest fan and I don't love this song, but if you listen to the lyrics it's hard not to get a little mushy! With lyrics like "And when you cry, I will cry, And when you smile, I will smile, And next time when I look in your eyes, We'll have wings and we'll fly" how could it not be on a list of love songs?
"I love lying next to you, I could do this for eternity, You and me—we're meant to be." Any questions as to why this song made the list? Say what you want about Miley Cyrus, but this is a beautiful song about a beautiful emotion. I wouldn't hesitate to send this to someone I love!
There are thousands of songs about new love, new flirtation and new hope for love. What about when the newness dies down and you're comfortable? Does the love stop? Of course not! Still Into You is the perfect song to describe this feeling. You've been in your relationship, things aren't exciting anymore, but "even on our worst nights, I'm into you."
I'm a huge Justin Timberlake fan! Anyone that knows me would actually be surprised five of his songs aren't on this list! Pusher Love Girl is a fun song that compares a relationship to a drug addiction. Sure, there are other songs out there like that, but that doesn't stop this from being one of my favorites.
A super cute song about wanting to be with someone, My House is definitely a great love song. With lyrics like "If I can’t bring you to my house, I’ll bring my house to you” how could you not sing along?
If you haven't had the best experiences with relationships or you have low self esteem, having this song sent to you would make your heart soar. A sweet song about someone loving you despite what you feel about yourself may be just what the doctor ordered sometimes!
Now, this is a catchy song that caught on fast and definitely got stuck in the heads of millions of people! It isn't just a catchy tune, it has some really sweet lyrics that I, personally, can't get enough of. The lyrics are not only easy to learn, but they definitely make my heart swell.
Another song about being loved when you may not feel like you deserve it because who doesn't just adore that feeling? Just because you don't feel like you're deserving doesn't mean that it won't happen and Hayes makes sure to let you know it's possible. "'Cause everything that don't make sense about me, Makes sense when I'm with you," you don't need to love yourself for someone to see what's amazing about you.
Everyone’s version of what makes a love song may be different. I figure, if it gets you thinking about the one you love or have loved, then it’s a love song. Do any of these tunes pull at your heart strings or have sentimental meaning? What other songs get you feeling all gooey?
