Christmas and the party season, in general, is a time for fun and frolics with family and friends, but along with this positive side, the festive season also has the potential to bring up the age-old dilemma of reconnecting with old aunts and uncles, distant cousins, and friends of friends who can’t help but ask the annoying question of ‘so, why are you still single?’. It’s a topic that nobody in the world wants to discuss at this time of year (or anytime!), so here are some of the best responses when someone asks 'why are you still single' at Christmas.
Let them know that you really don’t appreciate the invasion of privacy by treating the question with the upmost sarcasm! Something along the lines of “oh, I don’t know, it might have something to do with all the feathers that are underneath my clothes, not to mention the scaley parts!”. They’ll soon get the message and move on!
If you don’t want Aunt Debbie to focus on your singledom, work to turn the tables on her by asking her questions about her own relationship. She’ll get so carried away with talking about herself that she’ll forget about asking you any more about your own romantic life!
Scare them away by answering their first enquiry in a really intimate, TMI kind of way. Give them some of the juiciest, eye-popping tidbits about your last relationship and breakup, and give them a little too much information so that they regret asking in the first place!
If you don’t want to be gawked at and repeatedly asked for the entire festive period with your family, then pull out the sympathy card right at the start by pretending that the situation is too raw and fragile for you to talk about. Your people won’t want to upset you so they won’t carry on asking, unaware that you aren’t raw at all, you just can’t be bothered to talk about it!
If all else fails, the only option left is to just be honest! At the end of the day, you saying that you just haven’t found the right person yet is much less interesting than the rumours that people can make up if you stay silent. Just rip the band aid off, address the situation, and hopefully, everyone can move on!
