As Augustus says to Hazel: "It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you." One of the important lessons from The Fault in Our Stars is that it's impossible to avoid heartache.

Hazel and Gus love each other, but their health problems make their relationship difficult. Even though they know that one of them will die, they stay together. They can't remain as only friends, because their feelings are too strong. Despite their struggles, they're able to make their relationship work, because they truly love each other.
