1

Determine the Cause

The first thing you should do if you want to learn some new ways to motivate your partner is to determine the cause of their sad mood. Have they been recently laid off or are they having problems finding a job? Are they very stressed lately or is it something else that they are not telling you about? Just talk to them and find out what’s bothering them.

2

Offer Examples

If your partner needs a little pep talk, then one of the best things you can do is to offer them evidence of their success so far. Just give them examples, remind them how talented, hard-working and ambitious they are, remind them of their past accomplishments and encourage them to pursue their dreams, since they have all the qualities they need to reach all their goals.

3

Suggest Small Steps

Sometimes big dreams can be pretty scary, and that’s why it’s best to suggest to your partner to start with small steps that they can take towards reaching their goals. You could suggest that they make a list of all the things that stand in the way of their success, and also a list of all the people that can help them make their dream a reality. Just tell them that usually small steps lead to bigger ones because this belief will increase their motivation.

4

Don’t Be Pushy!

Try to avoid being pushy, since by doing this, you will only make them more stressed, more insecure and even more annoyed. Don’t put too much pressure on them, since you can really hinder any potential progress this way. There’s a thin line between being supportive and being too pushy, so make sure you don’t cross it!

5

Don’t Gush!

I know you are trying to be supportive and you are doing everything in your power to be as encouraging as you can be, but make sure you are not gushing too much about their accomplishments. I’m not saying you shouldn’t praise them, but if all you do all day long is tell them how amazing and talented they are, you might come off as insincere. Be specific with your praise and tell them why they have the ability to make their dreams come true.

Accentuate the Positive

The best way to motivate someone is by accentuating all the positive things that result from their actions. For example, if you try to motivate your partner to work out and eat healthier, then just remind them how sexy they look when they exercise and how happy they used to be doing it.

7

Reward Every Try

Try to reward even the slightest attempt, and when they do come through, be happy, praise them and show your appreciation. Don’t nit-pick every little detail, be nice and express your gratitude. They will be more motivated if they notice that their actions are making you happy and they will realize that this way, they are happy too.

It’s very easy to become demotivated sometimes, but you can overcome this stage in your and your partner’s life by taking action and putting a little effort into it in order to solve that problem.
